New Writing Home Page

The Royal Exchange puts new writing at the core of its work as a theatre, and to that end we aim to build relationships with as many writers as we can. We are constantly on the look-out for new and exciting voices in playwriting. We have existing commissions from emerging and established writers to generate work across both our spaces, we read unsolicited and agent-represented scripts, we hold a young playwrights course called THE TWELVE and a writing group for local writers called WRITERS EXCHANGE and we also run the BRUNTWOOD, Britain's biggest playwriting competition.

You can see two Bruntwood-winning plays at the Royal Exchange in early 2011 - WINTERLONG by Andrew Sheridan, premieres in the Studio and MOGADISHU by Vivienne Franzmann opens in the Theatre. We are delighted to announce that MOGADISHU has just won the George Devine Award 2010. The Award, recognised as one of the most prestigious for new writing, was set up in 1966 as a memorial to the life and talent of George Devine, Artistic Director of the Royal Court 1956-65. Previous winners include Edward Bond, Mike Leigh and Conor McPherson.PUNK ROCK, a Royal Exchange commission and hit production, by Simon Stephens, will be going out on a National Tour this autumn.
