Script Submissions

What is our unsolicited scripts policy?

At the Royal Exchange we are passionate about new writing and are constantly on the look out for new voices to fill our repertoire. We believe that new writing should reflect and respond to the contemporary world. At its best, it articulates the problems and potential of today's society.

So to that end, we do have script windows at certain points throughout the year when we are open for unsolicited script submissions by email from any writer living in the UK or Ireland. During this window we will try to read as much material as we can, but please note that we rarely programme historical / biographical plays or produce adaptations/versions of classical texts from this route.

When is the next script window?

The next script window is between October 1st and October 30th 2010. A
s we try to give feedback that is detailed and constructive, w
e don't have the window open all year round. We receive a huge amount of material and we need time to catch up!

Can I send you my script?

If you live in the UK or Ireland, we would be very happy to read your script, although due to limited resources, we can only read one script per writer a year. We do not accept musicals, radio or screenplays and please note the advice above regarding historical/biographical plays and adaptations.

How do I send you my script?

Is your play the best possible draft that you can produce? If so, follow the steps below to submit a script:

1. Your script should be saved as a WORD or PDF document. The name of the file should be the name of your play.
2. Attach the script to an email and in the subject of your email please put the title of your play in capitals followed by the work unsolicited eg "HAMLETunsolicited".
3. Send the email to us at unsolicitedscripts@royalexchange.co.uk
There is no need to send us your biography, or even a synopsis of your play.

We will then send you a receipt within two weeks of receiving your email and we aim to give you a response to your script within four months. We will send the response to the address on your email.

Why don't you accept hard copies?

The Royal Exchange Theatre only accepts paperless submissions in a bid to save the world's resources, build a more efficient submissions process, and to make our script service more accessible for those who may not have access to a printer.
